Self-introduction

Dear Professor Brad, My name is Poh Cheng Quan. I am a year one student in civil engineering and currently one of your students in the effective communication module. I graduated from Nanyang polytechnic with a diploma in biomedical engineering. One of the reasons I chose to pursue my studies in civil engineering is that I am curious and fascinated by how a unique and complicated structure can be built on an empty land.  The role of an engineer has captured my interest in civil engineering, as engineer plays a very important role in shaping the country.  Even though I have studied in another engineering field, I believe that with hard work and maintaining a positive mindset can lead me to becoming a professional engineer in this specific field. I enjoy travelling and eating good food, especially with family and friends. I love to discover and explore new places that I have not been to before. It really amazes me when I come across different types of unique structures around the w

The Importance of Communication Skills for engineers

“I contend that we (engineers) are undervalued because of our widespread inability to explain what we do to the general public (and why it is so important). It is one of the hardest goals to accomplish, to be able to boil down difficult concepts into a short and easily understood presentation or elevator pitch.” Marybeth Miceli, President, Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, USA (2011 ) The work that an engineer goes through are usually very complicated, it requires years of experience on a specific field to truly understand it. Which makes it very challenging for us to explain the difficult concept in engineering through words that can be easily understood by the public. Therefore, this causes the public not able to completely understand the importance and work done by an engineer, which led to them neglecting the hard work done by engineers.
